I think these simple words best describe this wedding day. On this sunny summer day I arrived to find a smiling bride without a care in the world. Katie was relaxed and excited for her wedding….Excited to be married and excited celebrate with her family and friends.

Katie arrived at the wedding in a horse drawn buggy so picturesque that it could have been taken from a fairy tail. The service was held on the lawn of St. Ann’s Chapel in Kennebunkport Maine over looking the ocean. Perfect in so many ways!

Dan & Katie left the service in the buggy and headed for the town dock to take a quick sail before joining their guests for a celebration and a few surprises that made this wedding one for the ages. After a 30 minute sail Katie and Dan sailed to the dock at the edge of the Nonantum Resortto join their guests.

As the guests all enjoyed the evening sun and a few cold drinks, a black stealthy looking motor boat drove up the river in front of the lawn. This boat was not like your normal pleasure boater as its crew all donned wet suits, life jackets and bullet proof vests. Seconds later a blue boat passed, captained by non other than former president Bush. It would be an understatement if I shared with you that this man is Dan’s idol. Lets just say that Dan is a big fan!

A few quick waves of the hand from the bride and Mr. President stopped his vessel and with some help from the secret service docked his boat to congratulate this young couple. It is so amazing that a former president of this country would interrupt his afternoon to congratulate a total stranger. This was not just a quick stop. It took some time to get his boat docked and he even invited the bride and groom to join him aboard the boat for a quick chat and a few photos.

Imagine being able to say “the president crashed my wedding!” How amazing!

Julia and Matt at The River Drivers Restaraunt

This past Friday I spent the day at the edge of one of my favorite places in the world. Millinocket, Maine is in many ways a border town. A small'ish town with a thriving population that in recent times owed it's existence to the forestry industry. Today, like many towns forced to deal with change they are in the midst of acclimatizing to an economy that is much more diverse. It's a last stop for provisions and the benefits of civilization before entering the North Woods and Baxter State Park region. I've spent much of my life ambling around the north woods both as a Reg. Maine Guide leading clients, and on my own adventures chasing both rivers and fish. I feel so incredibly fortunate to "know" much of this region, and whenever I get the chance to return I jump at it. The wedding of Matt and Julia was just one of those opportunities.
Although the location was beautiful and personally relevant, the weather overcame the odds, and the wedding party was a ton of fun - these are not the things that stick out for me. You see, Julia(in her mid-20's) is a cancer survivor! She has recently come through a battle with Hodgkins Disease and is as healthy and vibrant a young woman as ever. Perhaps if anything her experience has left her more appreciative of what life has to offer, and as her Mother explained to me, "she(Julia) got us all through this". "Julia is a rock", and would not for one second believe that her disease would stop her. On top of her battle with cancer, she fell in love, built a life together with Matt, built a home, planned a wedding, and so much more. Each time I think of the story that is Matt and Julia's life together so far, I get a lump in my throat. This is an example of the real stories of peoples lives that make what we do so powerful. I got to make a connection, and got an insight into a phenomenal couple that has faced what many of us hope we never have to. They know they have what it takes to get through "the hard times".
So, if you hadn't figured it out by now I'm pretty astounded by these two. In a small attempt to honor Julia and her battle I have decided to donate 15% of all print sales from this event to the Maine Cancer Foundation.

Courtney and Ty:

I pride myself of the fact that I normally get the photographs from a wedding or any other shoot online in about a week. But the last two weeks have been a wee bit busy. Despite 12 hour days I have not yet finished editing Courtney and Ti’s engagement photos.

So… When I return from this weekends wedding in NYC, the first thing I am going to be doing is finishing these engagement photos. And….. Sending this fun couple a free 11x14 print of may favorite photo from the shoot. I know most photographers take a few weeks but I feel bad… so your getting a $100 print in the mail!

About the shoot:
If I had to describe this photo shoot in a few words it might be: Laughter. Silly… and a ton of fun! These guys drove to Cape E. from Bangor for their engagement shoot and from the moment they stepped out of the car to the moment they drove away, we all had a smile on our face. We laughed our way through a 90 minute shoot and the result show it!

Tom & Noel

Two weeks ago I spent two hours in the studio with Tom and Noel. This was their “engagement” shoot but the premise of this photo session was to capture the intimacy between a two people. An attempt to capture the connection that a couple shares…

One of the wonderful things about this shoot is that Tom and Noel seem to have an understanding that to create a few amazing photos, you must step away from the norm. As the photographer this means trying new lighting style knowing that the first 10 images may not come out perfect but the pursuit of something extra ordinary is worth the challenge. Finding clients that appreciate the concept of wanting more than the normal stuff is truly rewarding as an artist.

Below are few of the images that I am comfortable placing on the blog. Most of them I have kept private at the request of my clients.

Stages & Jake

Last week as part of a promotion we offered 30 minute “mini studio sessions” to the families of our friends at Stage Academy. We share an office inside stages and wanted to give their clients a little something extra to kick off the summer. The results from the two day event are so much fun and the families all seemed to enjoy themselves. But one seven year old little boy seemed to steal the show. Young Jake arrived with mom and in 30 minutes left with no less than 100 photos that could be on the cover of any children’s clothing magazine. Jake is blessed with the charisma of seasoned Broadway performer and seems to have been born to look into a camera and smile. You have a bright future Jake!

Ben Shea @ 3 Months

All of our blog readers know that we are expecting a baby on Christmas day. Since we found out about having a baby, I seem to have been energized when it comes to studio photographer with infants. Last week I spent an hour with 3 month old Ben Shea. Ben has changed sooo much since his first visit at 3 weeks. I am just so shocked to see how much personality he has at only 3 months. All dressed up in his colored shirt he looks like a little man. A very little man!

At the HEART of the Matter

On occasion, when we aren't booked for a wedding or some other weekend photo shoot we are asked to help out local charities with their fundraisers. This past Saturday we got to help the local chapter of the American Heart Association with their "Heart Ball". It was a well run event, that was attended by many of Portlands' finest. I don't know the statistics, but from my observations a good deal of money was raised for the Association. Our role at the Ball allowed us a few very brief moments with many of the attendees. We set up a makeshift studio in the lobby and grabbed a few frames of some of the guests as they found time between socializing and bidding in the silent auction. It was a lot of fun and we got to meet some great people.

Christina & Jeremy's Wedding Photos

Bangor Maine Wedding,

We met Christina and Jeremy at a wedding show last year and hit it off right away. Then Chris got to reconnect with these two while shooting the wedding of one of their friends in Jamaica. It’s not common that we travel outside of our own towns to do an engagement shoot…. But a warm sand beech engagement shoot is always a welcome trip in the middle of a Maine Winter. The Wedding was this past weekend in Bangor, my home away from home in my past life. It was fun to return to the area and to share in the excitement of their wedding day.

A light drizzle kept us inside for photos but as the ladies in the wedding party will attest to, we still managed to have a ton of fun creating a few wedding photos that non of my past clients have had. Perhaps even a few photos that no bride in the world has ever had in her wedding album.

This past Sunday I traveled north for a wedding in the quaint towns of Newry and Bethel Maine. On this gloriously sunny day, Keith and Megan would tie the knot and share with me and their guests a beautifully done wedding service and reception. I started my day snapping a few photographs of the men, all dressed up and enjoying a cold malted beverage under shade of the historic coverage bridge just down the road from Sunday River Ski Resort. The men arrive on time, relaxed and ready to take a few non-traditional wedding “formals.” The image below of the men hanging from the windows of the covered bride is one of my favorites of the day.

An hour later I joined the ladies for a few prep photos and a quick car ride down to the same covered bride in order to give them a chance at a few formal and not so formal wedding photos. In the image below I climbed half way into the rafters of the covered bridge and photographed the bride from above as you walked away. As a photographer it is often the photographs that don’t show the persons face that seems to express the most amount of emotion. Perhaps its because the viewer of the faceless image is allowed to place their own emotion onto the photo much the way someone does with an abstract oil painting…

Senior Photos

Today marked the start to another summer of senior photos!

If you are see this blog entry before June 15th and you want your senior session for free, please call either of our offices.

Riley Photographic sponsors ambassadors for High School Senior portraits. Each year we have 2 males and 2 females from each school act as ambassadors for us. Basically what this means is that they get a free 1 hour senior photo shoot in May or early June, they can have a couple quick outfit changes, they can bring a friend if we aren't full on ambassador spots for that school, and then we give them our cards etc to hand out.

For each person that comes to us for senior portraits from your son/daughter, we pay our ambassadors $20. This comes in a check at the end of the season, usually end of October once we have accounted for everyone's contribution. In addition, you get a viewing of your photos at our studio, and if you like the pictures and want to buy a print package, that's great, and if not, no harm done. Print packages start at $125. We've never had people not buy them, but we never want you to feel obligated.

90% of our wedding clients are people we have never met or met briefly while photographing the wedding of one of their friends. This weekends wedding was a little different. Chris and I had a chance to reconnect with old family friends from 20+ years ago. It pains me to admit that I have friends that I have not gotten to see for 15 years as it means I am getting old, but that’s life I guess.

We grew up sailing the coast of Maine with the groom’s family and have visions etched in my memory of exploring coastal communities and islands. The perfect childhood memories that as a new parent to be, I can only hope to provide for my children.
But this day was not so much about the past and so much more about the future.

Ken or “Kenni” as I called him when he was 10 years old looked great and didn’t hide for even a moment the affection he felt for Leah. Ken’s wife Leah is amazing! Beautiful, kind and a gracious bride that navigated her wedding day with a smile that spread like wildfire through the reception hall.

The service was held in the quaint little town of New Castle New Hampshire with all 200 of the seats occupied with family and friends. Our bride and groom drove off in a old Studebaker convertible and joined their guests after spending a few moments alone at the edge of the ocean.

Despite a weather report that had promised rain, the sun was out all day. Between the good weather and the people from Moxie Events running the show, this wedding day was perfectly planned.. right down to the last dance song that seemed to captivate all of the guests like I have yet to see at a wedding.

Congratulations and have a great time in Hawaii.

11 Months & SOOOOO Cute!

I first met Annie when she was only a few weeks old. Today Annie and mother Amanda joined me in the studio for a little photoshoot.

Its hard to explain how amazinly good this child was today. If my baby is this good just one day out of 10 I would be so pleased. Annie loves the camera and even let me hold her to get used to the feeling. We had a blast together!

Amanda: Don’t worry about the scratch on Annie's nose. I will fix that in Photoshop on any photo that you or your family selects.

The Fisher Ladies

A Little Off Topic:

As many of you know Kristin and I are expecting our first child on Christmas Day. We have known for a week and since then I have had a chance to do a few studio shoots with young kids and infants.

For some reason I find myself studying every parent and child that I have had the pleasure to work with. Subconsciously I think I am searching for the extra tib-bit of knowledge that might come from being around children before I am thrust into the world of fatherhood. Excited and scared, each subsequent studio shoot with young families is adding to my excitement to be a Dad and raise a child with my amazing wife. Karen and Craig at the Harding Allen Estate

Last weekend we got to launch into spring with not only a gorgeous, warm day, but with a wedding that rivaled all that mother nature served up. We spent the weekend at The Harding Allen Estate, in Barre Massachusetts capturing the wedding of Craig and Karen. Tim arrived the night before in hopes of catching a little of the morning "fun run" put on by the bride. I was travelling from a decidedly farther origin, flying in from a Mexican photographic adventure with not much time to spare. Due to some surgical planning, some good luck and perhaps a few karma chips cashed in, I put together a chaotic mix of planes, buses, and rental cars to show up at the event. With a half hour to spare I had time to walk the grounds, meet all the major players, and fall into a comfortable rhythm with the Groom and his men. With Tim covering all that happened with the ladies, and me with the guys, we were both having a blast utilizing the landscape and grounds of this wonderful estate. Craig and Karen were not only laid back and a lot of fun to work with, they were also up for pretty much anything we could toss at them. We shot separately for two hours before the wedding, utilizing every inch of the place and still managing to keep the bride and groom from seeing each other. The effort of keeping them apart while still shooting both sides of the party and using each part of the grounds was well worth it when Craig saw Karen pass through the arch into the garden. He lit up into the most pure smile imaginable.
The day was idyllic on every level. After it was over, all the guests had departed to a parade of sparklers, and we had enjoyed a few quiet moments with Craig and Karen in the soft light surrounding the reflecting pool , we then joined the families and wedding party(as we were staying at the Estate), kicked off our shoes, and enjoyed a cold beer as we listened to Buffett(the groom is a full-on parrot head) sing the praises of the Carribean life that the couple was headed to on their honeymoon.
The morning came too quickly and with it came the other half of what is considered a typical New England spring day. The gray and drizzle didn't deter these guys. Karen donned a "throw away" dress we brought for her and we headed out for a brief trash the dress session with them. They even volunteered to jump into the rather chilly water of the reflecting pool. Okay, so maybe they eased in....

As we rode home to Maine we chatted about how much fun these two were, how great it is when a couple gives us the time and energy to get beyond the norm, and how most of all we couldn't wait to see the images. These are just a tiny sampling of our "favorites".

The Walker Family

I spent an hour zipping around the park on Wednesday evening with the Walker Family. Mom, Dad, the the two kids and I had a blast as we played in the park for a few family photo just before sunset.

Maurine Raymond

But on this first warm day of spring I had a change to get to know these two while running all over Fort Williams Park for their engagement photos. I spent an hour with Jodi, Riley and baby Ben this morning at the studio. At only a month old Mother Jodi looks amazing and Ben is so fragile.

The photographs taken today were taken with a very hot lighting technique intentionally whittening Ben's skin giving him an extra innocent look. He was soo good to sit still for a half hour and even opened his eye for a few frames.
